Building Africa with African Ideas!

54 Countries and Rising
American Institute for African Development (AIAD), a private operating and grant making foundation, aims to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights, and economic, legal, and social reform. On a local level, AIAD implements a range of initiatives to support the rule of law, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, AIAD works to build alliances across borders and continents on issues such as combating corruption and rights abuses.

Our focus is clear—and limited—and prioritizes some of the most neglected issues. We identify a specific point of intervention and apply our efforts against a theory of change. We take risks, make big bets, and move with urgency. We are in it for the long haul. We advocate—vigorously but responsibly—in our areas of focus.Delivering results with the resources we have been given is of the utmost importance—and we seek and share information about those results. We demand ethical behavior of ourselves. We treat each other as valued colleagues.

The foundation's African Development Program is working with motivated partners to create opportunities for people to lift themselves out of poverty and hunger. Our strategy is focused. Because most of the world's poorest people rely directly on agriculture, we support efforts to help small farmers improve crop production and market access. Because loans, insurance, and savings can help people weather setbacks and build assets, we facilitate access to financial services for the poor. And because information can change lives, we support free public access to information. We also support a range of learning opportunities, including potential new areas of long-term giving, and we respond to emergencies through our Special Initiatives grantmaking.
